When the kids come to our academy and start training, they perceive a very different way of doing things. On the field, the coaches follow a methodology that helps them not only to improve their skills, but also to understand the game. What is the Kaptiva Method?

At Kaptiva Sports Academy, we have developed, and continue to improve, a training system based on three pillars: games, questions, and concepts. Let’s take a look at each of these steps.

1. Games

The pure and simple game. This first point consists of creating concrete problems and studying the different ways of solving them. For example, using jokers who do not ‘play’ for any team, but occupy specific positions to develop the exercise.

When an important tournament or match approaches, once the opponent has been analysed, the exercise is transferred to the field. In this way, the problems analysed represent the opposing team to practice for the event.

The types of exercises that are carried out are very varied: how to position the defence or attack, study positions when the ball arrives, ball control or how to move without having the ball to support other players, for example.

2. Questions

Secondly, the coaches conducting the exercises ask questions that the players have to answer. They are not given the answer immediately, but try to find it for themselves.

For example, during an exercise, a player may be asked what the exercise is for. Or whether his position is correct and why. There are many types of variables, but the important thing is that a dialogue is created between the coach and the player. If they don’t know the answer, the coaches rephrase the question so that the children only have to answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

The aim of this step is that when a real match situation arrives, the players have already developed a self-analysis of each situation and know how to solve it. It is to create independent individuals, capable of seeing beyond the pitch.

3. Concepts

Concepts are a transmission of knowledge. We are no longer talking about dialogue, but that they learn from each exercise and take what they learn with them. It is no longer a question of learning how an opposing team plays, but of analysing a variable, however different it may be, and knowing how to respond.

When a player finishes a training session, he must be able to understand what he has learnt and what he has used it for. It is not about warming up the body, exercising and handling the ball. It is about solving complex problems and generating a capacity for analysis.

Likewise, it is not just an individualistic technique but a team technique. As usual, not everything depends on one player, so you also have to understand your teammates. How are they going to act? Are they well positioned for my next move? Can I advance or delay the ball?

Then… what is the Kaptiva Method? Of course, there is no infallible method, but the KSA players are becoming more and more complete day by day. We want them to perform well on the pitch but not to be machines, but human beings with the ability to analyse and reason in difficult situations.
