The football tournaments, as we have already mentioned, are very important for the kids, the families and the staff of Kaptiva Sports Academy. Not so much for the results, but for the physical and emotional development of the players. But, what we are going to discuss next, are the duties of the coaches during the tournaments.
First of all, prior to a tournament, regular meetings with the team should be scheduled. These are essential to ensure that everyone understands and accepts the game model. These meetings should serve to reinforce key concepts, clarify roles and motivate players.
Discussions should focus on the Game Model, but also include broader topics such as team goals, daily habits and the mindset necessary for success.

How football coaches prepare for tournaments
The coach plays a pivotal role in preparing the team for success before each match. This responsibility encompasses various elements, from tactical planning to logistical coordination, all designed to ensure the team is fully prepared and aligned for competition.
Obviously, it is their responsibility to design a clear tactical approach for the upcoming match. They should develop a game plan focused on possession, pressing, counter-attacking, set-piece strategy or defensive solidity, depending on the team’s capabilities and the opponent’s characteristics.
They should also be mindful of logistics. That is, that all players have their corresponding equipment and that the warm-up material is available and at hand.
Finally, coordination with the medical team is necessary. In this way, they ensure that all players are in optimal condition and ready for the match. This collaboration is crucial in the pre-match phase, especially if there are any concerns regarding player fitness or potential injuries.
In-game responsibilites of KSA coaches
They play a critical and dynamic role during the match, ensuring that the team is mentally prepared, physically ready, and tactically aligned for success. The responsibilities extend beyond just managing the game.
They also involve motivating players, making real-time decisions, and ensuring that the team remains organized and focused throughout the match. They are also responsible for remembering the tactical game plan, their individual responsibilities and the common objectives.
The coaches should not forget the logistical part, which includes cameras recording the match so that the plays can be analysed afterwards.
Their task does not end at the final whistle
Once the match is over, coaches must evaluate the team’s performance, ensure players’ recovery and prepare for the next steps of the tournament. This phase includes a lot of feedback with each member, continuous coordination with the medical team in case of injury and strict control of logistics.
It is important that the feedback, although strict, is always honest and constructive, so as not to damage the morale of the players or the team. Areas for improvement need to be reviewed, but also what has been done well needs to be pointed out.
It can be a halfway point between matches. This phase is not only about tactical preparation for the next match but also about supporting the players’ social, mental, and emotional well-being, which is essential for maintaining peak performance throughout the season.
Feedback and responsibilites
Finally, after the tournament, the coach must assume responsibilities beyond the results. This phase is about reflecting on the team’s performance, offering constructive feedback, and preparing for future development. It’s a crucial time for learning, recovery, and setting the stage for improvement.
It is also important to talk to the families and transmit them the feelings of the tournament. The coaches should analyse in the recorded matches everything that is necessary to improve and continue developing as individuals and as a team.
These are mainly the duties of the coaches during the tournaments. This is how we work at Kaptiva Sports Academy. If you need more information about the coaches or any other subject, do not hesitate to contact us.
